Experienced Horticulturalist/ Gardener Wanted in Fairfax Station, VA
Overview
The owner of two private 1-acre properties in Fairfax County bordering county parkland is seeking a skilled and thoughtful Horticulturalist/Gardener to plan, develop and maintain different residential gardens, one with a dedicated botanical planned and being built. The job will focus on plant health, seasonal care, and long-term garden development. The two properties include multiple garden spaces, including country and kitchen gardens and several distinct landscape areas.
Property & Gardens Include
Country garden with pathways, sculptures, and reveals
Kitchen gardens with annuals and edibles
Waterfall/ pool garden
Front-of-house gardens with seasonal plantings
Wooded lawn garden
Lawns, hedges, and mature trees throughout
Key Responsibilities
Provide hands-on care of all garden areas, including planting, pruning, dividing, and general horticultural maintenance
Maintain plant health, soil quality, and overall garden presentation
Perform and oversee pruning of perennials, shrubs, and small trees
Manage irrigation systems and monitor site conditions (sun, moisture, drainage)
Address environmental - rainfall drainage challenges
Coordinate mulching, composting, and bed preparation
Assist with plant replacements and ongoing refinement of planting areas
Desired Qualifications
5 years of experience in estate gardening, public gardens, or high-end residential landscapes
Strong plant knowledge, particularly perennials, shrubs, trees, and botanical-style gardens
Knowledge of seasonal garden care in the Mid-Atlantic (Zone 7a)
Attention to detail and pride in presentation
Formal horticultural training or degree preferred but not required
Personal Attributes
Calm, organized, and observant
Self-motivated with excellent time management
Respectful of a private estate environment
Passion for plants, garden structure, design, and long-term stewardship
Additional Information
The current garden manager is available to assist with transition and knowledge transfer
This role offers the opportunity to steward a thoughtfully designed property and guide its continued development over time
Compensation
Hourly or salary commensurate with experience. Retirement and health benefits available.
